For the home theater release of the fantasy action artist "Godzilla 2: King Of The Monsters", we take a look at the MonsterVerse and explain when the four previous films actually play.
The American production company Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have created with the so-called MonsterVerse a commonly shared film universe centered around the legendary movie monsters Godzilla and King Kong but occasionally populated by other Titans. Three works have already been published, the fourth is scheduled. We explain how the films fit together in time.
MonsterVerse's first movie is "Godzilla" by director Gareth Edwards ("Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"). The fantasy action-star begins with two previous stories from 1954 and 1999, before the main action in the 2014 present begins, in which the first MUTOs (Solid Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) appear in Japan and leave a trail of devastation. Godzilla should stop the prehistoric monsters as their natural enemy.
"Kong: Skull Island" (2017)
With "Kong: Skull Island" director Jordan Vogt-Roberts ("Kings Of Summer") provided a reboot of the "King Kong" franchise, which is thus integrated into the MonsterVerse. After recourse to the war year 1944, the main plot of "Kong: Skull Iceland" in 1973 and thus acts as a prequel (instead of a continuation) of "Godzilla". A group of soldiers, government officials and civilians follow the myth of a gigantic fool on Skull Island - and find it.
"Godzilla 2: King Of The Monsters" (2019)
"Godzilla 2: King Of The Monsters" by Michael Dougherty ("Krampus") is the direct sequel to "Godzilla" and consequently plays five years after the first installment, ie 2019. Founded in 1946, the Monarch science organization seeks to stem the events surrounding the Titans, But the state urges the organization to cooperate, otherwise, all primeval monsters would be killed as a precaution.
"Godzilla Vs. Kong "(2020)
The fourth movie of MonsterVerse, "Godzilla Vs. Kong "by Adam Wingard (" You're Next "), does not start until 2020 (German theatrical release: March 12). What is clear, however, is that Godzilla and Kong's Unification Sequel are tied directly to "Godzilla 2: King Of The Monsters" and thus play 47 years after "Kong: Skull Island". So in 2020! COMICS AS AN ADDITION AND BACKGROUND STORY
Apart from the not quite linear structure, with "Kong: Skull Island" inserted in between a prequel, the timeline is not very complicated, because three films take place despite smaller flashbacks in the respective present. "Godzilla" received "Awakening" about a prequel graphic novel, in which the early sightings of the MUTOs (from 1943) are discussed and also "Kong: Skull Island" was after the theatrical release with the four-part comic book series "Skull Island: The Birth Of Kong "adds. For "Godzilla 2: King Of The Monsters" appeared the graphic novel "Godzilla: Aftershock", which fills the period between 2014 and 2019.
MONSTERVERSE PLAYS 1.5 BILLION DOLLARS
But before the next installment of the MonsterVerse hits the cinemas, you can watch the third movie in the series to refresh or complete. "Godzilla 2: King Of The Monsters" has been available as Video-on-Demand since October 3, 2019, and on DVD and Blu-ray (also in 3D and 4K) since October 31st.
By the way, MonsterVerse's three films have sold nearly $ 1.5 billion worldwide ("Godzilla" $ 525 million, "Kong: Skull Island" $ 566 million, "Godzilla 2: King Of The Monsters" $ 386 million).
